Vicksburg, Mississippi is a city located on the Mississippi River in the western part of the state with a rich history dating back to the 18th century. During the Civil War, it was an important location for the Confederate army. Union General Ulysses S. Grant launched a prolonged siege of Vicksburg in 1863, which ended with the surrender of the Confederate forces on July 4, 1863, which was a significant turning point in the war as it gave the Union control of the Mississippi River and split the Confederacy in half. After the war, Vicksburg's economy rebounded as it became a major port and industrial center.
